Mavis Camera Classic

The Original Pro Camera for iPhone

Mavis Camera Classic was the first app to bring professional filmmaking tools to the iPhone, offering features like focus peaking, false color, zebras, waveform, and vectorscope.

Designed to deliver a true pro-level experience in your pocket, it provides the same advanced production tools found in high-end filmmaking cameras—optimized for the iPhone at a fraction of the cost. Enjoy a classic shooting experience with DOP and fullscreen modes, landscape-only framing, and support for 4:3 video formats.

Focus

Achieve pinpoint accuracy with Focus Peaking and Expanded Focus, two essential tools designed to enhance your precision.

Focus Peaking highlights high-contrast edges in a bright color within the viewfinder, helping you quickly identify which parts of your shot are in sharp focus. This visualization is only visible in the viewfinder and does not appear in your final recording. Expanded Focus allows you to digitally zoom in within the viewfinder, giving you a closer look to fine-tune your focus with absolute precision.

Both features are industry-standard tools relied on by professionals, ensuring you capture every detail with confidence.

Exposure

Zebras

Zebras highlight parts of the image that are over a set exposure threshold (this can be set in the settings). Use them to ensure your shots are never overexposed.

False Color

False color is another powerful tool for visualizing exposure. It uses a gradient of colors, transitioning from blue to red, to represent the full range from black to white. This method is especially useful for identifying small white highlights and assessing the level of detail in shadow areas.

False Color Ranges

False Color Ranges provide an alternative way to visualize exposure, using distinct colors to represent different signal levels. A detailed guide on color interpretations can be found within Camera Classic.

Manual Shutter

Adjust the exposure by modifying the ISO or shutter speed to smooth out any peaks and troughs. If these adjustments don’t resolve the issue, consider refining your lighting setup. Camera Classic can be a valuable tool to help you achieve precise lighting.

Shutter Angles

Set your shutter to precise angles for perfect motion blur in every shot. With our Shutter Lock feature, you can lock your shutter to a specific angle (e.g., 180°) while maintaining full control over ISO.

Waveform Monitor

The waveform monitor ensures you capture video with the optimal dynamic range. By maintaining a well-balanced vertical spread on the waveform, you can prevent overexposure and underexposure. Flattened white peaks indicate blown-out highlights, while crushed black troughs reveal lost shadow detail—both signs that the dynamic range is exceeded.

Timecode

Camera Classic features both time-of-day and offset timecode. Since each copy is synced to the same remote time server, you get near-frame-accurate timecode across multiple devices. This makes it an ideal solution for multicam shoots, shot referencing, and logging.

Camera Classic embeds timecode directly into each video file, ensuring seamless compatibility with most professional editing softwares.

UltraSync BLUE

Mavis Camera Classic is fully compatible with UltraSync BLUE, enabling seamless synchronization with an ultra-precise external time source. Leveraging Timecode System’s advanced sync technology, Camera Classic ensures flawless synchronization across all multicamera setups—from high-end professional cameras to DSLRs and Atomos monitor recorders. This means you can keep Camera Classic perfectly in sync with all your other devices. Additionally, you can connect multiple Camera Classic units to a single UltraSync BLUE, ensuring all your video sources are perfectly aligned.

Pro Interface

Mavis Camera Classic is designed to be a versatile tool for fast-paced shooting environments. The functionality is born from our own experiences on set, resulting in an intuitive and responsive interface that adapts to the needs of professional filmmakers.

While it’s fully functional in auto mode, Camera Classic truly shines when using manual controls. Focus and exposure adjustments are seamless and easy to make while shooting. In auto mode, these controls display real-time information about the camera’s focus and exposure. Simply grabbing the controls will instantly switch them into manual mode, giving you full creative control.

The left-hand side menus provide quick access to essential functions during recording, including focus and exposure settings, along with shooting assistants. Settings that cannot be adjusted during recording are conveniently located in the settings menu.

DOP mode

DOP Mode provides cinematographers with all the essential tools they need on set. Instantly check your exposure levels using the waveform monitor and visualize chrominance with the vectorscope. Access real-time data for exposure, color, and focus settings, allowing you to adjust values on the fly. Additionally, the enlarged duration/timecode display gives you precise record time tracking, while the larger VU meter lets you closely monitor your audio levels.

Fullscreen mode

Fullscreen mode enhances your viewfinder experience by offering a maximized, distraction-free display while maintaining essential control. We’ve streamlined the interface to keep only the crucial information at your fingertips, allowing you to focus entirely on your shot. Whether you’re composing or recording, you can easily switch back to DOP mode at any time.

Color

Mavis Camera Classic gives you extensive control over the color of your shots. The built-in vectorscope lets you fine-tune colors with precision, eliminating the guesswork that can be influenced by lighting conditions, surrounding colors, or even personal perception.

The full-scale vectorscope provides a detailed and precise color analysis of your scene, as interpreted by the camera. By aligning the color of a white or grey surface to the center of the vectorscope, you achieve an accurate representation of true white. For consistent color accuracy, simply set an object’s color to a fixed angle on the vectorscope. This ensures uniformity across your shots, regardless of the white balance settings.

While the white balance can be set automatically, this may result in unwanted color casts or the removal of desired ones. To maintain precise control, you can set and lock the color balance across three customizable presets. These presets can be selected or adjusted in real-time while recording, giving you full flexibility over your footage.

Manually adjust the Kelvin temperature to suit your lighting conditions, or use the ‘Set White Balance from Scene’ feature to automatically match and lock the white balance to your environment before you begin filming.

Audio

Our advanced audio engine now fully supports both internal and external audio sources. Capture broadcast-quality sound with an external microphone connected via USB-C.

Utilize Mavis Camera Classic to seamlessly monitor and record your audio sources. The built-in VU meter ensures that you can easily track audio levels, helping you maintain optimal sound quality and prevent any clipping or peaking.

Mavis Camera Classic offers full control over your audio with adjustable gain settings for both internal and external microphones. For a detailed breakdown of supported features, visit the specs section.

Real-time audio passthrough for monitoring in headphones gives you complete control and confidence that the audio you’re capturing sounds great.
